Matthew Rehwoldt Reflects on His Rusev Feud in WWE

Back when he was known as Aiden English, Matthew Rehwoldt would literally sing the praises of his WWE ally Rusev, en route to the ring. “Rusev Day” became a catchphrase, and ultimately the duo feuded. English would claim he had video proof of something illicit between himself and Rusev’s wife Lana in Milwaukee, and it ultimately turned out to be a bluff. English would lose the feud, become a commentator, and leave WWE during pandemic roster cuts.
Now working under his real name, Rehwoldt is a commentator for TNA. But in an interview with Fightful, he reflected back on the Rusev storyline. Rehwoldt had previously noted that he thinks very carefully about storylines and arcs. Asked then by Sean Ross Sapp what his character was thinking provoking Rusev in that way, he replied:
“The world may never know. Look, it’s on a videotape. I’d like to think it was me doing a really bad self taped monologue to try to get on to like The Surreal Life or something like that. Like in my character’s head canon, that’s what he was doing. But he was just really desperate for it to not come out. He was hoping it didn’t. It was like a bluff. I don’t want to have to show you this…and then his bluff gets called and it’s just him cutting this weird monologue.”
