On the latest episode of What Happened When with Tony Schiavone, the AEW broadcaster gave a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of a recent video tribute to legendary Florida announcer Gordon Solie, which promoted AEW’s recent shows in Florida. You can check out some highlights below:
Tony Schiavone whose idea it was for recreating the Gordon Solie tribute in AEW: “Well, the reception has been great. It was an idea of Tony Khan’s. He sent us a very long text and came up with this idea. And so we immediately went to work on it. Phill Ada and all the guys in Nashville worked pretty hard on it. I spent some time here in the Bat Cave, brought up the old green screen again. And went and looked at some Gordon Solie stills, and saw that he was wearing a boutonniere, and got some glasses that I thought were close to Gordon Solie’s glasses. Tony Khan said, ‘Why don’t you even wear a turtleneck?’ And I said, ‘I can do that.’ And then I also got the old school mic that I saw that Gordon Solie had, and put that up, and we rolled on it.”
On how long it took: “Tt actually took me probably 20 minutes to record, but four hours to find all my equipment and get it all set up and to frame it and everything. So again, a pat on the back to the boss for coming up with this idea. And another big pat on the back for Phill and all the guys in Nashville for making it work and making it look old school, right? They made it look like an old VHS. It was really cool.”
