Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC on ESPN 72, I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host for the event. We’re still in the warehouse for this one but there are a couple of decent fights to be had. Mostly the main event is doing the relevant work when top middleweights Roman Dolidze and Anthony Hernandez square off and while a title shot seems unlikely to come out of this fight it’ll put the winner a critical step closer to that goal. The co-main event got changed over the last two weeks, originally it was Steve Erceg vs. Hyun Sung Park but Park got bumped to fight Tatsuro Taira last week so replacing Park is Ode’ Osbourne. That’s why two flyweights are battling at bantamweight here, asking Osbourne to make flyweight on 2 weeks notice just wasn’t going to happen. After that I think Miles Johns vs. Jean Matsumoto stands out, also Andre Fili vs. Christian Rodriguez might not suck. Anything beyond that we’re mostly in hope mode because very little of it stands out on paper.
UFC on ESPN 72 comes to the world from the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. John Gooden, Daniel Cormier, and Dominick Cruz will be calling the action for us. Remember we’ve got the smaller 25 foot cage in the Apex and the newer rules are in play, hopefully someone remembers that the hands don’t count towards being a downed opponent anymore.
Cody Brundage has gone 5-5-1 with 1 No Contest in the UFC, he’s coming off of a retroactive draw that was originally a loss for him but was changed due to a regulatory error into a draw. Brundage is trying to get back on the winning side of things here. Eric McConico dropped his UFC debut back in February but he’s hoping for a more positive outcome to his sophomore outing. The odds like Brundage at -220 to +180 for McConico.
Light Heavyweight Bout: Cody Brundage (11-6-1 1 NC, 202.5 lbs.) vs. Eric McConico (9-3-1, 204.5 lbs.)
ROUND ONE: These two are the same height while McConico has five inches of reach advantage. Southpaw for McConico, and they touch gloves to get things going. McConico with a counter left to an inside leg kick and he drops Brundage briefly but Brundage wrestles up on a single leg. Brundage isn’t able to finish the single leg against the fence but McConico isn’t able to get free and do damage. The ref separates them after thing’s stalled out, commentary seems unsure of that one but the position had stalled, Brundage being bent over holding a leg doesn’t change that. Bit of a left from McConico, Brundage then shoots a double leg all the way across the cage and he’s able to finally finish a takedown. McConico wall walks and Brundage is on his back standing. They break without incident. McConico gets back to stalking forward. Front kick from McConico. Brundage blocks a head kick then has a few punches blocked. Brundage pushes close and lands a knee then an elbow. A few rights from Brundage, he’s just swinging and they tie up. That’s where the round ends.
SCORECARD: 10-9 McConico but could go the other way
ROUND TWO: Pretty quick clinch this round and McConico pushes Brundage into the fence. Elbow from McConico then a knee to the body. A few more knees from McConico then Brundage tries a spinning elbow as they break. McConico punches back in close and they both swing for a bit before separating. Brundage pushes after a double leg and gets it against the fence. McConico wall walks into a clinch, Brundage is bent over looking for a single leg. A few elbows from McConico land, Brundage is still holding the single leg. Now Brundage switches towards a double leg and he’s able to finish it into open space. Brundage has the legs laced up, McConico fights up anyway and they separate. McConico pushes forward again and lands a body kick. Brundage might be fading and McConico fires another body kick before the round ends.
SCORECARD: 10-9 Brundage but again fairly close, 19-19 overall
ROUND THREE: McConico stalks forward again, Brundage definitely looks winded. A few kicks from McConico, they’re blocked but he’s more comfortable throwing them now as Brundage has slowed. Bit of a right from Brundage. Left hand from McConico then a knee and they clinch up. Elbow from McConico. Another elbow from McConico then an uppercut. The ref breaks them up, deserved. McConico resumes walking Brundage down and fires a body kick. Brundage tries to blitz but doesn’t land. Blitz from McConico and he digs the body a few times in close. Body kick from McConico. Right hand from Brundage. High kick from McConico. Brundage blocks a few more kicks. Left to the body from McConico. They both miss punches then trade in close, Brundage lands a right hand to close the round.
SCORECARD: 10-9 McConico but again close, 29-28 McConico overall
OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Eric McConico via split decision (27-30, 29-28 x2)
Well those scores are all over the place, there isn’t a single unanimously scored round across all of them. No interview for the winner.
Gabriella Fernandes has gone 2-2 in the UFC but she is on a two fight winning streak and a third consecutive win would set her up nicely to aim at ranked opponents. Julia Stoliarenko has gone just 2-6 in the UFC, she’s traded wins and losses while going 2-2 in her last four though and she’ll be hoping that pattern holds long enough to avoid another losing streak. Fernandes is the favorite at -425 to +330 for Stoliarenko.
Women’s Flyweight Bout: Gabriella Fernandes (10-3, 125.5 lbs.) vs. Julija Stoliarenko (11-8-1, 126 lbs.)
ROUND ONE: Stoliarenko is an inch taller but the reach is identical. They touch gloves to get us going. Southpaw for Fernandes. Both women do some lead hand fighting and Stoliarenko probes with some leg kicks as well. Leg kick from Stoliarenko. Right hand from Stoliarenko after she failed a takedown. Jab from Stoliarenko. Left to the body from Fernandes. Bit of a right from Stoliarenko. Fernandes lands a left hand. Stoliarenko pushes into a clinch on the fence. Fernandes is able to spin free relatively quickly. A few body kicks from Fernandes are blocked but she’s opening up a bit now. Left to the body from Fernandes then a body kick that Stoliarenko didn’t like at all. Another body kick from Fernandes then they trade punches in close. Both women are landing but Fernandes has more power right now. Stoliarenko blocks a head kick to close out the round.
SCORECARD: 10-9 Fernandes
ROUND TWO: Both women back to hand fighting as Stoliarenko looks to pressure forward. Single leg from Stoliarenko, she winds up settling for a clinch on the fence. They break without incident. There’s a cut around the left eye of Stoliarenko now. Jab from Fernandes. Fernandes with a body kick. Another body kick from Fernandes. Glancing left uppercut from Fernandes, Stoliarenko is struggling to get anything going but Fernandes isn’t willing to be the instigator at the moment. Another body kick from Fernandes is blocked. Stoliarenko tries a single leg, decent entry but she has to settle for a clinch on the fence. Fernandes is able to spin free and get back to range. Inside leg kick from Fernandes. Glancing head kick from Fernandes. Stoliarenko lands a bit of a right hand. They split jabs to close the round.
SCORECARD: 10-9 Fernandes, 20-18 Fernandes overall
ROUND THREE: Stoliarenko comes out looking to push the pace but she’s not good at cage cutting and still can’t get an entry into her takedown attempts. Fernandes avoids a poor takedown attempt. Bit of a left hand from Fernandes. Fernandes with a body kick but Stoliarenko pushes into a clinch off of it. Stoliarenko’s takedown game is just poor and it’s limiting her game. They trade a few body blows before getting back to space. Fernandes avoids an elbow. Body kick from Stoliarenko but there’s not a lot on it. Fernandes misses a few strikes. They trade rights. Stoliarenko with a body kick. Fernandes lands a left hand. Bit of a one two from Fernandes. Stoliarenko with a blitz but nothing comes of it then Fernandes fires a head kick to close out the round.
SCORECARD: 10-9 Fernandes, 30-27 Fernandes overall
OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Gabriella Fernandes via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28 x2)
I guess Stoliarenko could have edged out maybe the third? No interview again.
Uros Medic has gone 4-3 in the UFC but he is coming off of a loss to Punahele Soriano and now he’s trying to avoid his first losing streak. Gilbert Urbina has gone 1-2 in the UFC and most recently got finished by Charles Radtke and now tries to avoid his first official losing streak. The odds like Medic at -290 while that +235 comeback on Urbina might be a tempting little value bet.
Welterweight Bout: Uros Medic (10-3, 171 lbs.) vs. Gilbert Urbina (7-3, 171 lbs.)
ROUND ONE: Urbina is two inches taller with four inches of reach advantage. Southpaw for Medic. Quick right hand from Urbina drops Medic but he gets up quickly and back to circling. Body kick from Medic. Urbina with an inside leg kick. Medic lands a solid left hand then a knee in close. Another left from Medic SLEEPS Urbina and we’re done here.
OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Uros Medic via KO, punch, at 1:03 of Round 1
The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Medic for his work. For scoring our first finish of the evening Medic does get an interview, he feels great to have gotten the win and trained hard for this fight. He says his heart is full and thanks his team and family for believing in him and helping him. He talks us through the finish and says his goal is still to reach the top 15 rankings. Joselyne Edwards is on a two fight winning streak and looks for her second three fight winning streak in the UFC here, if she can get there she’ll defend her ranking and should be able to fight up in the ranks instead of down. Priscila Cachoeira has gone 5-6 in the UFC, has never had a winning record in the promotion, and frankly should have been cut for her repeated dirty fighting but the UFC content machine demands blood to grease the cogs. Cachoeira did win her last fight though and might finally crawl her UFC record to the .500 mark with a win. Edwards is a heavy favorite at -395 to Cachoeira’s +310.
Women’s Bantamweight Bout: Priscila Cachoeira (13-6, 134 lbs.) vs. #14 Joselyne Edwards (15-6, 136 lbs.)
ROUND ONE: Edwards is an inch taller and has five inches of reach advantage, she’s also 7 years younger. Cachoeira fights off a single leg attempt. Edwards shows the jab a few times, both women are just looking for reads. Leg kick from Edwards then a right hand. Cachoeira falls short with a few punches. Another leg kick from Edwards. Calf kick from Cachoeira. We get a time out as Edwards got poked in the eye, she takes 30 seconds then we’re back to fighting. Body kick from Edwards. Another leg kick from Edwards. Cachoeira looks to push forward with punches but hasn’t landed much yet. Edwards with a left hook. They trade in close. A few stance switches from Edwards now as she moves, she’s still mostly orthodox though. Hard left hook then a right hand from Edwards freezes Cachoeira, who then slowly falls over and Edwards hits her a few more times before the ref jumps in.
OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Joselyne Edwards via KO, punches, at 2:24 of Round 1
The First Round Finish Club thanks Mrs. Edwards for her work. Mic time for Edwards and the translator, she feels great and thinks she’s become a true professional and the results are showing. She talks us through the finish and knew Cachoeira would keep her chin exposed like that. Asked about the future since she’s on a three fight finishing streak she wants to fight Irene Aldana or Mayra Bueno Silva, both of those are fairly reasonable call outs.

Elijah Smith is on a six fight winning streak including his UFC debut back in February, he’s trying to extend that success here and establish himself as a prospect of note. Toshiomi Kazama has gone 1-2 in the UFC but he is coming off of a win and could get his first UFC winning streak up and running here. Smith is the biggest favorite on the card at -800 to +500 for Kazama.
Bantamweight Bout: Toshiomi Kazama (11-4, 136 lbs.) vs. Elijah Smith (8-1, 136 lbs.)
ROUND ONE: Smith has two inches of height and reach advantage. Quick shot from Kazama, he gets to the back of Smith but Smith shakes him over the top to get on top in half guard and starts elbowing him. Some more punches and hammer fists from Smith, Kazama goes for a kneebar but loses the angle and switches to an inside heel hook attempt. It’s dangerous in places but Smith keeps punching and gets his leg out of danger though still in a leg entanglement. Smith keeps landing some elbows and punches. Kazama keeps trying to attack a leg but he’s eating strikes and winds up losing the leg attack as Smith settles into half guard. Now Kazama gets to butterfly guard then attacks an armbar, nice attempt but Smith pulls free and fires more punches as he passes to half guard. Smith drops another elbow. Kazama tries a triangle choke but Smith powerbombs him into unconsciousness and we’re done here.
OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Elijah Smith via KO, powerbomb slam, at 4:10 of Round 1
The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Smith for his work. Kazama was out for a long time, he’d regained consciousness when they announced the decision though. Mic time for Smith after what will feature in the Knockout of the Year discussion, he first offers prayers for his opponent and knew he could hang with him on the mat. Kazama is able to sit on his stool during the interview. Smith talks us through the finish and mentions if you want to slam yourself out of a triangle choke you have to make sure the other guy lands on his head, he asks for a bonus which seems as close to a guarantee as you’ll get tonight. Asked about the future he says only God knows how high he can go, if he says smart, strong, and injury free who knows where he’ll take this.

Julius Walker dropped his UFC debut via split decision, now he’s looking for a more productive outcome for his second outing. Raffael Cerqueira has gone 0-2 in the UFC and really needs to find that first UFC win here because an 0-3 start is usually crippling to UFC ambitions. They clinch again and Walker pushes Cerqueira into the cage. Trip from Walker and he moves to the ride position then gets both hooks in. There’s an arm triangle attack if Walker wants to try it, he loses it but keeps the ride position and lands a few punches. Cerqueira wall walks but gets mat returned into the ride again. Walker has moved to mount briefly then to the ride again. Cerqueira moves to the fence but he’s having to move a lot of weight to do anything. Walker with a few punches then moves to half guard. Cerqueira tries for a switch but loses it and Walker gets back on top in half guard. A few short punches from Walker and he moves to the mount. Walker to the back, or at least a hip, and he drops punches as the round ends.
SCORECARD: 10-9 Cerqueira but could go the other way, 29-28 Walker overall
OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Julius Walker via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-27 x2)
30-26 seems generous, I’m not sure which round rose to the 10-8 criteria. Mic time for Walker, he feels he was too hesitant on the feet but the fight was a good scrap. He says he’s a very strong light heavyweight and he could over power a lot of other guys. He mentions his legs went away in the third after getting hit and he learned the chicken dance on that one.
Eryk Anders has gone 3-3 in his last six fights but he is on a two fight winning streak and most recently beat the reanimated corpse of Chris Weidman. If Anders can get to three in a row here it would be his most sustained success since his first three UFC fights in 2017. Christian Leroy Duncan has gone 4-2 in the UFC and is 3-1 in his last four fights, he’s coming off of a win and is looking to build another winning streak. The odds are with Duncan at -520 to a +390 payout for an Anders win.
Middleweight Bout: Eryk Anders (17-8 1 NC, 186 lbs.) vs. Christian Leroy Duncan (11-2, 185 lbs.)
ROUND ONE: Duncan is an inch taller with four inches of reach advantage and he’s 8 years younger. Southpaw for Anders. Duncan looks to get his jab going, and pokes Anders in the eye so we’ve got a time out. Anders takes 30 seconds then we’re back to fighting. Duncan with an inside leg kick. Bit of a left from Anders. Again Anders with a bit of a left hand. Duncan misses a right hand. Glancing right from Duncan then he kicks Anders in the groin so we’ve got another time out. Replay confirms the low blow. No point deduction of course, because the rules are a suggestion at best in MMA. We’re back to fighting after 45 seconds. Duncan starts doing a little stance switching then lands a spinning back kick. Knee to the body then a right hand from Duncan but Anders ties up and trips him down. Anders gets to the ride position as Duncan wall walks with Anders still on his back. Duncan is able to get chest to chest and they trade knees while jockeying for position now. Elbow from Duncan. Again knees go back and forth, Duncan is the one with Anders on the fence though. Eventually Duncan pulls free and resets with inside leg kicks then a spinning elbow that rocks Anders and a few more punches to follow up and put him out.
OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Christian Leroy Duncan via TKO, spinning elbow and punches, at 3:53 of Round 1
The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Duncan for his work. Mic time for Duncan, he knew he could do this as he and his team really studied and figured out Anders given all the tape on him. He talks us through the finish then says he’d like to stay active and fight again before the end of the year.
Christian Leroy Duncan was relentless to the finish 😤 #UFCVegas106 pic.twitter.com/d1lArt9pde

Steve Erceg has gone 3-3 in the UFC but he is on a three fight losing streak, that’s moderately mitigated by one of those being a close title fight and another being to former champion Brandon Moreno. Ode Osbourne took this fight on very short notice, hence it being at bantamweight but he did just break his own three fight losing streak and could score one of the bigger wins of his career if he bests Erceg. Heck of a performance from Hernandez. Mic time for Hernandez, he was annoyed about his last fight going the distance because of his injured ribs and now he wants to prove he’s deserving of a title shot. He says he works his butt off to be in good enough shape to drown anyone and promises he’ll be the next champ when he gets a title shot. He talks us through some highlights, then when asked about the upcoming middleweight title fight he wants a fight that will get him to the title shot and will fight anyone who gets him there. It’s unlikely he gets the next title shot, but he should be fighting someone from either that main event or the upcoming Caio Borralho and Nassourdine Imavov bout.
