The King of the Monsters returns in a new installment of the franchise in Godzilla Minus Zero. During a GKIDS keynote presentation at the 2026 CinemaCon on Tuesday (Apr. 14), Oscar-winning filmmaker Takaashi Yamazaki took the stage to showcase the upcoming sequel. He revealed a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel and also debuted the first teaser trailer. You can check out the newly revealed teaser trailer below.

Godzilla Minus Zero also marks the first-ever Japanese project that is filmed for IMAX. The presentation confirmed the return of the first film’s stars, Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe, in their respective roles as Kōichi Shikishima and Noriko Ōishi.

The story picks up two years after the end of the last movie in 1949. Godzilla returns, regenerating from the damage he sustained at the end of the first movie. The movie continues the story of the Shikishima family, as they must face an all-new calamity.

Speaking on his return via a press release, Kamiki commented, “I am beyond happy to be able to participate in a film set two years after Godzilla Minus One, which is one of the most important works of my life. I also feel proud to have been able to work with Director Takashi Yamazaki and everyone on the team once again.” He continued, “The pressure of participating in a Godzilla work loved by so many people remains the same as in the previous film, but I have done my absolute best so that everyone who watches it, and everyone who loves Godzilla, can enjoy it.”

Hamabe also stated, “Following the previous film, I am grateful to be able to exist in the world of Godzilla Minus One as Noriko. My heart is already racing with excitement to share this grand moment with everyone as soon as possible, and see Godzilla Minus Zero in theaters soon.” She added, “Since this work will be released in Japan and the U.S. around the same time, I am very happy to be able to share Godzilla’s shocking return not only with people in Japan but also with those in America. I pray that this work will also be one that everyone can enjoy and love very much.”

Yamazaki also commented to fans, “See you at the movie theater!” Yamazaki is back behind the director’s chair, from a script he also wrote, and he once again supervises the visual effects. The film is currently still in production.

Additionally, Godzilla Minus Zero was shot with high-definition digital cameras certified by IMAX, and optimized in sound and imagery unique to IMAX screens.

Godzilla Minus Zero Teaser Trailer Teases an Attack on New York City

The teaser trailer features an ominous voice-over stating, “If their operation fails, maybe we’ll finally get to use it.” Godzilla is back, and he looks angrier than ever. Another clip shows an anguished Koichi flying through debris that appears to be floating in the air.

The teaser also ends with a striking image of Godzilla stomping next to the Statue of Liberty. It looks like Big G might be taking a bite out of the Big Apple in the upcoming sequel.

Godzilla Minus Zero will be released across North America starting Friday, November 6. Interestingly enough, the 1954 Godzilla movie was released on November 3. Minus Zero continues that tradition as it will also make its theatrical debut in Japan on Godzilla Day 2026.

GKIDS also confirmed that Cineplex Pictures will support GKIDS for the movie’s Canadian rollout on November 6. Release dates for other territories will be announced later on.
