As previously reported, AEW is planning a TNT special event for January 8 with the rumored name “Battle of the Belts.” This will likely serve as the first of four quarterly AEW on TNT events for 2022, while Dynamite will be moving to TBS starting January 5. Dave Meltzer reported more details on the January special on today’s Wrestling Observer Radio, including that the January special is only going to be one hour long.

Per Meltzer, “as of right now,” the show is planned to only be one hour long, even though the original idea for the quarterly specials was to present pay-per-view caliber matches and show on free TV to bolster audiences. Additionally, the cards were supposed to close to PPV level with multiple title bouts. Meltzer did note that the plan for the show to be only an hour could change at some point.

Meltzer also added that the quarterly specials were originally planned to be longer before plans later changed to have them at an hour. The quarterly specials are supposed to be modeled after the old WCW and NWA Clash of the Champions events, which offered major matchups on free TV cards.

AEW has not yet announced the details for the 2022 quarterly TNT specials or the initial January special. While Dynamite is moving to TBS in 2022, AEW Rampage will remain on TNT.
