On the latest episode of 1 Of A Kind, Bill Alfonso discussed the special bond he shared with Sabu, which began because Fonzie refereed the final match of Sabu’s uncle, The Sheik. Alfonso worked in ECW from 1995 through 2001 and was allied with Sabu and Rob Van Dam for much of that time.
Alfonso recalled how he became friends with Sabu and got paired with him on screen. You can check out some highlights below:
On the Bond He Shared With Sabu:
“I really enjoyed being around Sabu and ECW from ’95 when they put us together. We clicked right away. Because one of my first professional matches I refereed was his uncle, who broke him [Sabu] and Rob in the business. The Sheik, Eddie Farhat.”
On the Match With The Sheik:
“He was in a chain match with Terry Funk in Amarillo, Texas. And I referred to that, and The Sheik stabbed me with a fucking pencil. I’ve talked about that before. I’ve still got that lead mark right there where The Sheik stabbed me. When I told Sabu this story, f**king, he fell in love me right away.”
On How He Originally Got His Start In ECW:
“I was supposed to come in for four weeks, get choke slammed by 911, and I was out. Just a short program. But since I got so much heat and the people wanted to kill me. I had to get escorts to my car, because people literally wanted to hang me because I wanted to stop their ECW violence. So Paul Heyman said, ‘Fonzie, we’re going to keep you. We’re going to put you with Taz as his manager.’
“So I switched with Taz. We did some big angle where they pulled me with Taz. And I was with Taz for I guess maybe about a year or something. And Taz really got over, but he didn’t need me that much because he could do promos and that. So Paul even thought it’d be a good idea for me to go with Sabu and Van Dam. Because Sabu didn’t talk, and then we had that good mix between RVD, Fonzie, and Sabu, which was pretty cool.”
