Update on WWE’s Interest in David Finlay as He Bids Farewell to NJPW

There has been a lot of chatter around former IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion David Finlay potentially joining WWE after it emerged that he has been exploring options in America as he approaches free agency.
Finlay officially exited New Japan Pro-Wrestling at last night’s New Beginning in Osaka event. Following his defeat to Callum Newman, the 32-year-old was visibly and understandably emotional, as he bowed to the crowd and then embraced manager and NJPW booker Gedo. He kissed the company’s logo at the entranceway before expressing his gratitude toward fans.
This past weekend, Fightful Select reported that David Finlay and WWE had been in contact, but the website had not received an update on how those conversations went for weeks. Bodyslam+ is now reporting that discussions about Finlay have indeed taken place during WWE’s creative meetings. However, one source noted that there is no indication that he has agreed to a deal or is about to sign a contract.
Another source claimed that WWE intentionally planted the seeds on television recently with his brother and NXT talent Uriah Connors (Brogan Finlay) in case David indeed makes his way to the promotion. Connors notably walked out on Chase U on the February 3, 2026, episode of NXT.
