Hiroshi Tanahashi Shares Update Regarding His Final Opponent at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 20

Longtime Ace of New Japan Pro-Wrestling, Hiroshi Tanahashi, brings an end to his illustrious career at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 20, as he will wrestle his retirement match. The NJPW President appeared at today’s press conference for the upcoming show, sharing an update regarding his opponent.

Hiroshi Tanahashi said on his Wrestle Kingdom 20 opponent at the presser (via Tokyo Sports), “Please wait a little longer. I’ve fought many different wrestlers in my career. I’ll make sure to announce who I want to face.”

During last weekend’s Final Homecoming in Gifu, NJPW booker Gedo approached Tanahashi, offering to prepare an opponent for him at the event; he just has to give him the word. New Japan has not yet revealed Tanahashi’s opponent.

In other news for New Japan, ticket sales for Wrestle Kingdom 20 are doing well so far, with Tanahashi announcing at today’s press conference that more than 31,000 tickets have already been sold. This marks the highest attendance for Wrestle Kingdom 20 in six years, since Wrestle Kingdom 14 in 2020.

NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 20, featuring the final match of Hiroshi Tanahashi, takes place at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan on January 4, 2026 and airs live on NJPW World. Here’s the updated lineup:
