JBL Weighs In On Road Dogg Potentially Taking Over TNA Creative
On the latest episode of Something To Wrestle With, JBL endorsed the idea of Road Dogg potentially taking over a creative role in TNA and revealed how highly Vince McMahon thought of him. Road Doog exited WWE, where he was the co-lead writer of Smackdown, back in March and has been rumored as a potential replacement for Tommy Dreamer in TNA. Dreamer exited his spot in TNA earlier this month. You can check out some highlights below:
On Road Dogg In a Creative Role:
“I’d like to see him have creative control, and I’d like to see what he can do. I think he’s a guy who could handle that. A lot of guys cannot handle creative control — they need something to temper them, to filter them, to take away some of their craziness or some of the bad ideas. You need a Vince McMahon to be the guy who has the final decision. I think Road Dogg could handle this, and I’d love to see it happen because I think he’s smart enough to make it work.”
On McMahon Thinking Highly of Him:
“As I said last week, there are a few guys who’ve been trained by legendary creative people — trained by Kevin Sullivan, Dusty Rhodes, Eddie Graham, Vince McMahon. Road Dogg is one of those, and he was trained personally by Vince. I remember Vince saying, ‘I’ve got really big plans for him.’ He thought the world of Road Dogg, and Vince had massive plans for him. I think Road Dogg just got burned out is what happened. Vince would go through guys — he used to say, ‘I just use them until they get burned out, then go to somebody else, and they’ll come back later and get burned out again.’ That schedule, to book wrestling 52 weeks a year, is one of the toughest jobs in the world.”
On the Creative Role:
“You don’t know how people are going to be until they get into that role. You think you do, but you don’t know until they get in there. I think Road Dogg is going to be fantastic — he’s a smart guy, and he was trained the right way about how to handle this. It’s kind of like being a head coach. Until you’ve been around a lot of great head coaches, it’s hard to put practice structure together, structure for your team — there’s a lot that goes into it beyond just planning a game plan. Once you become the head of creative, that’s when you find out whether guys are going to sink or swim, and I think Road Dogg is going to do great. But that’s a massive step, going from being the number one guy underneath the creative head to being the creative head yourself.”
