WWE appears ready to fast-track Oba Femi to the main roster following a decisive moment on NXT television, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. He retained the NXT Championship against Leon Slater at New Year’s Evil on January 5. After the match, he left the title in the ring.

Sources indicate the transition was not part of a long-term storyline. Creative was informed that Femi was moving up and that they didn’t want him to lose momentum, then adjusted accordingly. Rather than booking him to lose the championship outright, WWE opted to protect his momentum. Those who have worked closely with Femi “have nothing but great things to say about him.” Several high-level officials reportedly view him as the potential “biggest major player of all.”

That belief was reinforced during his recent appearance opposite Cody Rhodes on Saturday Night’s Main Event. Rather than playing the underdog, Oba Femi controlled large portions of the match. The performance suggested WWE sees him as a dominant presence, closer to a monster heel like Bron Breakker, as opposed to Jey Uso, in that they plan to treat him like a major future player regardless of fan reaction.

Meltzer notes how Oba Femi’s departure was handled particularly delicately to protect Femi, as both Trick Williams and Je’Von Evans lost key matches on their way out. Femi did not. His eventual main roster brand destination remains unclear.
