At CMLL Viernes Espectacular Friday night, Claudio Castagnoli captured the World Heavyweight Championship from Gran Guerrero. Guerrero had held the title for 1,117 days.
AEW has had a working relationship with CMLL since 2023. thus allowing Castagnoli to continue to wrestle in AEW as well. Indeed, he’s scheduled to be on Dynamite Dec. 3rd, as he takes on his Death Riders partner Jon Moxley as part of the Continental classic tournament.
And now his boss in AEW, Tony Khan, has weighed in on X with formal congratulations. His not-at-all biased prediction is that Castagnoli will be a great champion. Frankly, most people who’ve observed Castagnoli over the years would agree that the man deserves a world title.
Congratulations to @ClaudioCSRO, the NEW@CMLL_OFICIAL World Heavyweight Champion!
On behalf of AEW, we’re very proud to have an @AEW star, especially one of Claudio’s immense stature, as Champion in CMLL!
Congratulations to CMLL, I think that Claudio will be a great Champion!— Tony Khan (@TonyKhan) November 29, 2025
CMLL has a dozen world championships, divided by weight class. Castagnoli has previously held the Ring of Honor World Championship, as well as multiple WWE Tag Team Championships with different partners, including Tyson Kidd, Sheamus, and Shinsuke Nakamura. The Swiss superstar is also a former AEW Trios Champion.
As Castagnoli is one of the biggest-name stars signed to AEW, it’s hard to imagine he’ll be champion away from the promotion for too long. Though if anyone can keep up a grueling schedule between two promotions in two different countries, it’s the athlete once dubbed a superman by WWE.
