Zelina Vega become the second-ever WWE Women’s United States Champion earlier this year, and she reflected on the value the titles bring in a new interview. Vega won the title from Chelsea Green in April and held it for two months.
The Women’s US Title has just turned a year old, and Vega spoke about the value of the Women’s US and Intercontinental Titles in an interview with the Babyfaces Podcast. You can see the highlights below:
On the Women’s US and Intercontinental Titles:
“I think it’s amazing. I think it’s something that we really needed. Especially for the women that don’t always get a shot at the World Championship. So it’s something that shows the people who are also working hard, not just in the world title picture, but we’re also getting recognized for the things that we’re doing, too. And that doesn’t mean that we’re not going to get to that eventually or when our time comes. It just means that we have something else to fight for, and to show how hard we’re all working and not just them.
So I thought it was really important, it’s just recognizing the other workers there. Which I think is really important. And for me, getting to bring that title to my family and being able to say like, ‘I finally did this for me’? It’s nice.”
On Not Going Back to Just Managing:
“I also want to make sure that people understand that, when people thought that when I got with my husband that, ‘All of a sudden she’s a manager again.’ And, ‘Oh, we’re losing her as a wrestler.’ You’re not. You’re not. I really want to stress that. Because the fun thing is Zelina has worn so many hats. There’s been Zelina [the] manager, there’s been Queen Zelina. There’s been LWO Zelina.
“But now I feel like this version of myself is the purest form and the most fun. I mean, you can even see it with people like, ‘Oh my god, she’s working with snakes.’ But I’ve loved snakes forever, you know? So, it’s nice to just embrace this form of me, and just really get to put that out there for people. And you know, I think they just accepted it with open arms as soon as that entrance happened. I feel like they really accepted that with open arms.”
