Csonka’s WWE Superstars Review 10.21.16

OFFICIAL RESULTS
– Nia Jax defeated Alicia Fox @ 3:35 via pin [**½]
– Darren Young defeated Jinder Mahal @ 8:59 via pin []

Nia Jax vs. Alicia Fox: This is a rematch from the Clash of Champions pre-show, Jax owned Fox but since there since Raw is only three hours long, Jax got lost in the shuffle. Fox tried to avoid the power of Jax, using multiple attempts at a sleeper. Jax didn’t have any time for that shit and tossed her to the mat. Foxy was resilient. Peppering Jax with forearm strikes and trying to keep momentum, but Jax cut her off and worked her over in the corner before tossing her across the ring. Jax worked a bear hug and rag dolled Foxy a bit, but Fox elbowed out and went for the sunset flip. Jax went for the sit down, but Fox moved and that allowed her to land a kick to the head and then the axe kick, but it only got 2. Fox followed with a tilt a whirl head scissors, but Jax caught her when she went for the high cross and planted her with the Samoan drop and that was that. Nia Jax defeated Alicia Fox @ 3:35 via pin [**½] I liked this better than their previous match. It was a little short, Fox got a little less in, but it had way better intensity and a sense of urgency. They improved on the previous meeting, Jax looked dominant and Fox’s hope spots came at the right time. This was rock solid work from the ladies.

– We then got highlights from the segment where Rusev introduced his family on Raw. I think that Reigns’ tone was off (the writing of his material), as there was too much joking between two guys that are about to step into HIAC. The beat down was solid as Rusev needed to get the upper hand and look dominant as the challenger, but it also feels repetitive. I have seen this before and they aren’t doing anything new make me care about the feud. You can read my WWE Raw Review right here!

– We get highlights from Rollins vs. Jericho from Raw. They again had a very good match, just seem to work well together and have chemistry. I’d love to see them get this time on a PPV where they can go full tilt. The big thing was that Jericho wanted to do this on his own, and Owens was the cause of the walls being broken up and leading to his loss. They are doing well establishing the Jericho and Owens dynamic, and the booking makes sense for a split, but they aren’t beating you over the head with it. Rollins also gets a win to keep his momentum going. You can read my WWE Raw Review right here!

Darren Young w/Bob Backlund vs. Jinder Mahal: These two faced off last week, and had a bad match. There was nothing good about the match that they had last week. Tom Phillips says that Mahal requested this rematch, in related news; I want to punch Mahal in the throat. Seriously, I cannot comprehend someone watching last week’s show and thinking, “Hey, lets book Mahal vs. Young again! We got a basic back and forth, with Mahal getting the early control working the side headlock. Young escaped, put together some offense and finished with the seated senton for a near fall. Mahal rolled to the floor and looked to go after Backlund, Young made the save but Mahal slammed him to the LED and we took a commercial break. Post break, Mahal worked what you’d normally call the heat, but there was none. Mahal is just so bland, I get that they needed bodies, but that’s all the guy is. He whipped Young from corner to corner, choked him out in the in the ropes. He then went back to the chinlock, Young flopped on the mat like a fish for a bit to simulate that he was still alive. Young eventually cut off Mahal as he came off the roes, Mahal missed the corner splash and Young laid in some chops and a clothesline. An overhead suplex followed and then he hit the apron back breaker for a near fall, I still can’t believe dudes are taking apron bumps on the B Shows, but ok. Mahal managed to score with a big boot, which got 2. Young then fired up, hit the rolling elbow and then the gut check and that was that. Darren Young defeated Jinder Mahal @ 8:59 via pin [*¾] This was in fact a professional wrestling match. A boring and lifeless one, but a professional wrestling match nonetheless. At least it was a bit better than last week’s match, but it had to be.

– We closed with footage of Goldberg’s return to Raw. It was a hell of a promo in front of an insane atmosphere. In all sincerity, that was the best promo Goldberg ever cut and between the promo and crowd response, he felt like a mega star. More importantly, it felt real and had great intensity. It was a hell of a segment to close the show, and if he can bring half of that intensity to the match, it may actually deliver something of quality. You can read my WWE Raw Review right here!

– End scene.

– Thanks for reading.

Fox vs. Jax was a fun little using that perfectly accomplished it’s goal and the Raw highlights were really good this week. Again, you can really skip Raw and get all you need here from that show. Young vs. Mahal wasn’t good, it was lifeless and took away from the show. Solid overall, but Main Event was more worth the time this week.
