Jeremy Irons is reportedly playing one of the original Watchmen characters in the upcoming HBO series. According to /Film, Irons is set to play an older version of Adrian Veidt, aka Ozymandias, in the ongoing series. Matthew Goode played the role in the 2009 feature film.

According to the site, early set photos had a headline which stated Veidt had died, so it’s likely that Irons will appear in flashbacks or has faked his death. The latter is definitely a possibility; Veidt is a mastermind who showed a distinct inclination toward moral grays (or full-on evil, depending on your perspective) both in the graphic novel and film. He is also very manipulative in DC’s currently-running Doomsday Clock, having implied he was dying of cancer in order to avoid death at the hands of Rorschach’s successor.

The site also notes that Jean Smart (Legion, Fargo) will be playing the role of FBI Agent Blake, a new character. “Blake” is the last name of the Comedian, aka Edward Blake, so it would assume that there is some connection there. One theory posed by the site is that Smart is playing Silk Spectre, who has decided to take on her father’s name.

Watchmen also stars Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Adelaide Clemens, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. The Damon Lindelof-run series will debut on HBO in 2019.
