Kyle Fletcher On the Disconnect Older Wrestlers Have With Current Wrestling: ‘The Business Evolves’

Kyle Fletcher does believe that older wrestling stars have a bit of a disconnect with wrestling as it is today, and he recently explained why that’s the case. A number of veterans have been critical — some constructively, some not — toward wrestling as it is today. Ted DiBiase, RVD, and Jerry Lynn are just a few veterans who have expressed criticism of the modern scene.
Fletcher was asked about the matter in a recent appearance on TMZ Inside the Ring. You can see the highlights below:
On Older Talent Criticizing Modern Wrestling:
“I think in a lot of ways there is a bit of a disconnect. My opinion is, wrestling is very nostalgia-based. And whatever you grew up watching — and if you’re in the business whatever you were a part of — you’re always going to kind of look at that in in a different light to everything else. And you’re always going to feel more connected to that.
“I think a lot of veterans — again, this is me talking from my perspective. I don’t want to put words in anyone else’s mouth. But the way I kind of view it is like, they think whatever they did was the best way it can be done. And I think a lot of people in wrestling feel like that, and it’s not true. The business is constantly evolving, constantly changing. I think if you put just for example a me [vs] Will Osprey match on any wrestling card before 2000, the people watching it would just be losing their mind at the things that they are witnessing. Just because it it’s all contextual. The stuff that happens in the ring nowadays just wasn’t seen before 2010. So the times have just changed, and I think you got to roll with that. “
On Having a Different Perspective Than Older Talent:
“I’m a lot younger than a lot of the other people on the roster nowadays, a lot of other people that are in wrestling nowadays. So I kind of have a different perspective to a lot of people. The wrestling that I grew up loving to watch, and the wrestling that I still love to watch, is probably different to a lot of these veterans that are giving me advice or other people advice.
“And that’s fine as well. I think wrestling is so beautiful because it it’s totally up to you what you enjoy. And you don’t have to enjoy what someone else enjoys. That’s fine as well. I’m never going to harp on someone for loving a match that I hated. That’s just not what wrestling is to me. So that’s kind of my my opinion on it all. Whatever you think wrestling is and what it should be, that’s totally fine. I think it should be the way that I wrestle. So yeah, it’s a bit of give and take.”
