Volador Jr. Unsheathes his Claws!

While donning an outfit with some semblance of a famous comic book hero is nothing new, Volador Jr. is taking his rudo gimmick and running with it. First he donned a Venom getup during the beginning of his Rudo run, now he also dons an outfit that pays homage to everyone’s favorite mutant, Wolverine. Volador Jr. says he plans to continue playing around with his getups and isn’t too pleased with Mistico taking a similar approach when he came out in a Mistico/Spider-Man outfit. Volador is said to have something brewing for Mistico and he also looks forward to taking on Sombra again.

Bizarro Return

AAA finally returned to action on January 15th and they started of with a bang. First off the new main storyline appears to be Cibernetico and his Bizarros taking on La Parka and members of the AAA roster. Cibernetico cut a promo stating that his godson, who also happens to be La Parka’s son, is a very bad educated child who Ciber had to discipline. He pulled out some x-rays and went on to say that he had proof that his discipline got “a little” out of hand. This prompted a furious Parka to come out. The Bizarros proceeded to beat down La Parka, having Extreme Tiger and Jack Evans run in for the save. The beat down was a given, in a new exciting twist, the Bizarros unmasked La Parka, then proceeded to place a new mask over his head, one that bares the resemblance to the Bizarro logo, the picture from AAA’s website says it all. La Parkas words to Cibernetico afterwards, “You will pay!” Effective words in any type of media!

Title Retentions

Over the past week, now remember, I go Friday to Friday for this column, CMLL put on a few big shows and did some damn good work.

To start off, Mephisto successfully defended the NWA/CMLL Historic Welterweight Title against long time rival el Hijo del Phantasma. The rivalry seems to be far from dead though, we might see masks put on the line pretty soon. La Mascara continued his success with the defense of the CMLL National Light Heavyweight title. This time the contender happened to be Rey Bucanero, who let us not forget recently took Mr. Aguilas hair. La Mascara was successful in the end.

Future Forecast

CMLL

Fantastic Mania 2011 is here as a lot of CMLL talent heads over to Japan.

AAA

Aside from the Bizarros/La Parka AAA feud, other big storylines consist of the Perros del Mal and Psycho Circus feud which all signs are pointing to Hair VS Mask match to finalize the rivalry. Also Konnan’s La Sociedad was attacked by el Mesias, which prompted Konnan to inform El Mesias that he would be bringing in someone from the past to deal with el Mesias.

Lucha Video Break

Todays videos consist of uploads from TheCubsfan. The CMLL video features a glimpse of some of the Generation 2011, this being Metal and Palacio Negro. In the AAA video we have the AAA Mega-Championship match between el Zorro and Dr. Wagner Jr. I promise you will enjoy one of these.

La Voz/The Voice

So translated this says, “I’m a fan of the side L.A. ParK and Psicosis/Nicho are on. My favorite feud is when La Pareja del Terror/Los Gringos Locos took on Octagon and el Hijo del Santo climaxing in the classic When Worlds Collide. Why no Psicosis on you mask list?”
Well here’s the thing, L.A. ParK is currently a Rudo, and Nicho is a Technico, so you got me on that one. Oh yeah that Gringos Locos feud is classic just like the match, now the reason for no Psicosis is simply due to it being a classic luchadores list, I might of slipped a but with Fuerza Guerrera, but I still counted him.

First, let me say I love the column.

The thing about Silver King changing his name to Silver Cain to wear a mask again made me wonder if that is why Rey Mysterio can wear a mask again in WWE (because he dropped the “Jr.”) or does it not matter since he primarily wrestles outside of Mexico?

Similarly, has there been any anger towards Dos Caras Jr. for just taking his mask off to become Alberto Del Rio and not losing it in a Luchas de Apuestas first or does it not matter because he also wrestles primarily outside of Mexico?

Thanks for the support. As far as the Silver Cain/Rey Mysterio thing is concerned it actually is close. Silver King lost his mask, started wearing one again when he jumped back to AAA. Now when AAA held shows in Mexico City, the Wrestling and Boxing Commission warned AAA that if Silver King wrestled with a mask he would be fined. He would usually perform in facepaint. When Silver King complained that they allowed Rey to appear with a mask their excuse was that Rey lost his mask in the U.S. so they had no say as far as Rey is concerned. Kinda B.S. but that’s how they do business, Silver King smartened up and found a loophole, he registered a new Wrestler License with the name Silver Cain, beating the commission at their own game.

Now as far as Alberto del Rio is concerened, at first when he was in FCW without a mask he was criticized heavily, this being in part his fault because when he announced he was headed to WWE, he said he would go straight to the main roster and would wrestle under his mask. Which as we all know never happened. Once he became successful though, opinions changed, one of the popular questions right now is if a luchadore would unmask to go to the WWE like the former Dos Caras Jr. did, guys like el Hijo de Canek have said they would, others like el Hijo del Santo have said no.

“Nice feedback, what parts don’t you agree with?”

Hijo del Rey Misterio would need a new gimmick if he were to work in TNA. Shark Boy Steve Austin is one imitation too many.

I’m not sold on Valiente and didn’t care for Ultimo Guerrero in the last World X Cup. Haven’t seen Relampago.

The others I would like to see in the next World X Cup for more exposure. Sign the top workers.

Yeah, Marvin is my first pick because he blends styles so easy. Mistico and Volador Jr. would be the top picks for pure luchadores.

WHOA! Putting el Hijo de Rey Misterio on the list was due to name value only! Also I don’t think he would much like to be called an imitation, this guy is the legit son of Rey Misterio, the Uncle of the WWE Superstar, if anyone has any rights to that name it would definitely be his son! My reasoning is since Rey Jr. has developed into a huge name in the WWE, that would go a far way to draw attention to this Rey Misterio.

The others I would imagine you would need more exposure for. That’s the only way I can see omitting Ultimo Guerrero yet requesting better workers.

Is mistico as big a draw now that he’s hee…. rudo. I know he was a huge draw as technico. Does he draw as that heel you just want to pay to see lose?

Posted By: Guest#3763

Mistico is still a name, which in essence means he still draws, especially for the casual fan. His Rudo run didn’t go past 2 or 3 months and he’s been a technico for a while now. Yes he still draws, just not as much, a lot of the magic he first had when he was being pushed has worn off, but put him in a match with the likes of Volador Jr., Sombra, or Ultimo Guerrero and you are bound to do good business. His Rudo run drew alot of interest when it began, but it was cut way too short to really be able to say if he drew more as a rudo.

Rudo vs. Tecnico: I usually find myself rooting for los rudos because los tecnicos have to play the characters so straight (unless they’re aaa tweeners). Exceptions like Extreme Tiger and Laredo Kid simply because they are pulling off amazing moves constantly. Feuds: really enjoyed Mesias vs. Cibernetico from 08-09 even though it may have went a little long. Currently enjoy La Parka vs. L.A. ParK with the history involved. Love any oldschool lucha feud with Tinieblas, he (and others of his era) would still be successful today.

Another Rudo fan! Yes it seems so easy to be a Rudo and so hard to be a successful Technico. Tweeners are too few and usually play one extreme over the other. They don’t truly balance both sides, just look at L.A. ParK.

Mesias and Cibernetico, man was that long, while it was a hot feud it did get a little overboard, like the casket match that was then lit on fire. Tinieblas being successful today? Maybe, his son Tinieblas Jr. hasn’t found the popularity his father had.

Hey Francisco:

Could you put some youtube videos of any Emilio Charles matches from his day in Mexico. I loved that guy. What’s he doing these days? He still wrestling or what?

Posted By: Joey Boots (Guest)

Holy crap an Emilio Charles question! That I did not expect, Emilio Charles died in 1994, his son who I assume you are talking about is Emilio Charles Jr. former Guapo and Talibanes member, ok the guy is doing indy shows, hasn’t been to prominent in much but yeah he’s still around, I’ll try to find some videos for next week, damn whats next some Cavernario Galindo questions!

No list this week due to time constraints, comments section is an open forum, also toss in any list requests.
